Phnom Penh: The National Election Committee (NEC) has issued a statement regarding the upcoming regular elections scheduled to take place in 25 capitals and provinces across Cambodia, including Kratie, Mondulkiri, Ratanakkiri, and Stung Treng. As the constitutionally mandated organization responsible for overseeing the electoral process, the NEC reiterates its commitment to conducting free, fair, and just elections in accordance with the principles of liberal multi-party democracy.
The NEC reported that 84.59% of registered voters participated in the last elections, a turnout that reflects the citizens' engagement in the democratic process. National and international observers have assessed that the elections organized by the NEC have adhered to democratic principles, taking place in a secure and orderly environment, free from violence and threats.
Since its establishment in 1998, the NEC has conducted regular general and non-general elections across various provincial capitals, including those in Kratie, Mondulkiri, Ratanakkiri, and Stung Treng. From 2022 to 2024 alone, the NEC successfully held four significant elections in accordance with national laws. These include the 5th Mandate Commune/Sangkat Council Election, which encompassed 1,652 communes, along with the election of deputies for the 7th legislature across 25 capitals and provinces. Additionally, elections for the Senate for the 5th legislature were conducted in 8 dioceses, and elections for Capital and Provincial Councils were held in 209 constituencies.
Looking ahead, the NEC is preparing to review the 2024 voter list and voter registration, which will take place in September across all communes in the 25 cities, districts, and khans.
The NEC emphasizes its continuous commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities in organizing elections since 1998, the year it began conducting elections independently. In its statement, the NEC urges all Cambodians to uphold the ideals and best interests of the nation. It calls on citizens to actively exercise their rights and responsibilities under the law and to resist believing in any incitement that deviates from the truth.
As the electoral process unfolds, the NEC aims to foster a strong sense of civic duty and participation, ensuring that democracy in Cambodia remains robust and vibrant.
